Germany
The Christkind or Christ-child delivers the presents
in Germany. Children leave letters for him on windowsills.
These are often decorated with sugar to make them
sparkle. St. Nicholas' only task is to take these
requests to heaven to the Christkind. The Christkind
garbed in a white robe and a golden crown, in turn,
delivers the presents to the children!
Holland
Presents are exchanged on St. Nicholas Eve,
December 5. Both St. Nicholas and Black Peter arrive
by steamer at the port of Amsterdam on December 6.
Black Peter represents the devil and it is his job
to punish naughty children! Nevertheless, children
still look forward to his coming because it is his
task to deliver the presents down the chimney.
Russia
The gift bearer in Russia is a lady named Baboushka.
It was said that she met the three kings on their
way to finding Jesus. Baboushka opted to finish her
work first. Unluckily, when she finally set off, she
got too delayed and lost her way! Now, they say she
wanders the earth in search of the child saviour.
This is why she leaves presents in every home in case
he should be there.
Spain
Los Reyes Magos or as The Three Kings are known in
Spain are the gift givers instead of St. Nicholas.
They visit the town on January 6th, which has since
been called the Epiphany or Twelfth Night. Straw or
barley is left in the children's shoes and left in
doorways as offerings for the travellers' weary camels.
In the morning, the barley has gone and has been replaced
by sweets and presents!
Philippines
We, Filipinos have a unique practice of exchanging
gifts called "monito monita". Participants write down
their code names on strips of paper. Afterwards, each
one picks a strip and the person on that paper becomes
the recipient of his gifts. General categories are
given for each gift period. For example, everyone
would be required to give something round and shiny
the first time; something long and purple the next
and so on until the final exchange of presents. Giver
and recipient only get to know each other upon the
exchange of the final gifts. Surprise!
