OLD WOMAN WANTS PET
by Regina S. Fernandez

There was an old woman
Who wanted a pet,
Just any old pet
That she could get.
She gathered some grass
On a battered old coat.
When she woke up next morning,
She had a goat!

There was an old woman
Who wanted a pet,
An affable creature
So her goat wouldn't fret.
She placed milk in a bowl,
On the driveway it sat.
When she came home that evening,
She had a cat!
There was an old woman

Who wanted a pet
To eat from the fourth plate
Of her dinnerware set.
She poured some cooked rice
Into a purple toy truck.
When she came back from jogging,
She had a duck!

There was an old woman
Who wanted a pet
To applaud the musicians
In their new string quartet.
(She played cello, the duck played viola,
the cat and the goat both played violin).
She put slices of cheese
In a dish by the door
And got herself mice --
One, two, three, four!

There was an old woman
Who wanted a pet
To round up the others
On trips to the vet.
She placed a big bone
On a fallen log.
When she rose from her gardening,
She had a dog!

There was an old woman
Who wanted a pet
To serve as tie-breaker
When a stalemate was met.
("Pancakes for breakfast?
Yes = 4
No, not again! = 4")
She dangled a carrot
By the barbecue pit.
When she returned from her manicure,
She had a rabbit!

There was an old woman
who wanted a pet.
Now that she had nine,
Was she happy?
YOU BET!
